• Middle Fish (Carlton)

The Thai curry at Middle Fish is as authentic as Pla herself.  Growing up in a beach-side town surrounded by fresh vegetables and spices, she moved to Melbourne and opened this converted warehouse dining room into an eatery with buzz and delicious Thai cuisine.  In the back street near Melbourne University, this is hardly the spot where one would expect to find a trendy, tasty, typical meal.

Invited for a blogger brunch, we were presented with a display of scrumptious nibbles.

Pla was kind enough to give a cooking demonstration with insider tips.  The kaffir lime leaf is not as strong here as in Thailand, so she buys them frozen from her home country.  Fresh coconut milk in Thailand is lighter, so here she adds water to calm the taste.

Vermicelli was served in a banana leaf with creamy, hot curry to be added.  The noodles were cool and the curry was green, fragrant and filled with tofu, carrot and beanshoots.

Bao were to another end with vegetarian fillings – tofu, mushrooms and spinach.

Lemonade and ginger sodas were flavoursome and a nice touch.

Mini Thai desserts looks adorable in the forms of fish, fruits and flowers.

Middle Fish is cool and typically Melbourne, designed by Khun Hearn.  The large open space is bordered with exposed red brick walls and a high wooden ceiling.  The setting was cool, the food delicious, the vibe lively.
