• Sister of Soul (St Kilda)

On a hot summers' evening, with the craft market throbbing with the chatter of bikini clad girls, and the beach streaming with bodies proud enough to be reminiscent of Copa, I discovered Sister of Soul.  As a new, large, modern cafe on the corner of Acland Street and Shakespeare Grove, I was happy that this was the vegetarian restaurant praised by my St-Kilda-local-friend.

Nabbing a table at the back near the open window, we sympathised with for the cooks in the over-heating kitchen. We, on the other hand, were very comfortable.

The menu is as eclectic as the suburbs' clientele. My friend opted for the Pad Ka Phao, I the burger, we the gyoza and spring rolls.

My friend delighted in her stir fried mushrooms in a variety of types with hot basil and chilli.


The Soulburger was served as a stack with a lightly fried tempeh pattie, beetroot, pumpkin, fried egg and salad greens. The burger was moist and I enjoyed it despite not typically being a fan of tempeh.  It held together well and was a wholesome and filling meal.  The chips were salted and herbed and enjoyable, but could have benefited from extra time in the fryer.


The gyoza held fresh veggies and pleasant flavours, as did the spring rolls.



With a chilled Mountain Goat Steam Ale and pleasant conversation, it was an enjoyable meal.    Since the closure of the arrogant, dining hall style, Soul Mama, there has been a gap in vegetarian eating in this hub. Unfortunately I have since heard mixed reports about this place, but as its teething is sorted, perhaps it will be the new locale converting everyone to fun vegetarian eating.

  1. I have eaten there a few times and the service and standard can vary. I've had great friendly service form French and Iranian waiters to poor service from someone who really didn't want to be there. I have never had a meal as good as my first experience. The food was so amazing I became fixated on the talented asian female chef who had everything under cool control. My following experiences have not been as good and I have not seen her in the kitchen again. I enjoy the freshness of the sago pudding in coconut juice with mixed fruit for breakfast. The venue also has a nice clean feeling which I like.

  2. Hopefully they will be able to sort it out after they've been running a while. The staff make such a difference to the dining experience.

  3. I went here again a couple of weeks ago... I am sad to say that the meal was not great. The brown rice arancini with satay was tasty but the eggplant parmigiana was undercooked and just a slice of eggplant with some sauce and cheese over the top. My friend was disappointed by her curry too. It is a shame, it was so tasty the first time.
