• Hobba (Malvern Road, Prahran)

Amongst the garages and shop fronts of Malvern Road is Hobba – another popular brunch spot made so by Melbournian’s favourite past-time of going out for brunch.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love brunch.  I just don’t like competing with others for a table on my precious weekends.  But sometimes it is worth it, and today it was.

The French toast I ordered was quite spectacular.  The milk and egg mixture had been soaked all the way through the thick, fluffy bread for the maximum custardy texture.  The edges were slightly crisp from frying.  The flavours were of a juicy, sweet, blueberry compote with a smooth, light banana crème.  To add to the creativity was sweet, buttery crumble like a caramelised shortbread.  It was the ultimate indulgence.

My friend had the smashed avocado with a poached egg, but without the mushrooms that usually accompany the dish.  The waitress explained that the eggs are slow poached, which almost saw me changing my order remembering the 63 degree egg I had eaten in Spain.  This was not quite as up to the gooey texture of the 63 degrees, more like one I’d do at home in an egg pod with turning the stove off after the water boiled.  The scoop of smashed avocado was so generous that my friend could not eat it all.

Seeming to be a converted warehouse, the atmosphere was lively, rather than hectic, and the wait for tables was momentary, rather than pain-staking.  We could sit on the high, backed stools, chat, eat, enjoy and relax (without being pushed out or screaming across a din of noise).  Well sugared and socialised, brunch at Hobba set me up for the weekend.
