Atmospheric, casual and Japanese, Horoki is essentially overrated.   The source of many positive reviews and busy lunch-time crowds, our visit to Horoki did not live up to our expectations.

I was concerned, when looking at the menu, that there were no vegetarian dishes.  When I questioned this, the waitress brought a separate menu with a choice of five different dishes: soba noodle salad, tofu salad, vegetarian sushi roll, vegetarian fritto or chips.  The bento menu (the only choice at lunch time) requires you to choose three of these plus rice or ciabatta bread (a weird staple for a Japanese lunch box).  I chose the soba, tofu, sushi and rice.

The meal was nicely presented in attractive dishes, spread out so that it looked huge despite being quite small.  The flavours of each dish were different.  The soba was done in a tangy sauce and served cold.  The tofu was also cold, sliced and in a miso sauce, which was tasty but not exciting.  The sushi was fairly standard.

The food was not bad, but we had no enthusiasm about it.  A nice spot to try, but I probably will not be returning.
