Kelp is the perfect brunch location after a morning surf at the back beach, or a big walk along the front esplanade - if you happen to be in Point Lonsdale.

Last Saturday, my dear friend and her partner were in Victoria for the second weekend in a row (with a flight and a drive from here to Adelaide and back in between).   Last week we were in Melbourne eating at the Green Refectory, this week they had a birthday party in Barwon Heads and we met for brunch at Kelp.
Kelp is one of the better cafes around the Bellarine.  On the main street of Point Lonsdale, it has a view of the kids’ playground and sea beyond it.  Despite the laid back beach feel of the customers, the service is as good as any nice café in Melbourne.

The coffee is good.  My flat white had hardly any froth and was strong and well made.

My friend mentioned Kelp to the other party goers and they replied that it has the fabulous muffins.  I am not usually a fan of muffins.  I find them bland like a substandard cake in a novelty shape.  The muffins at Kelp however are much more interesting.  The carrot muffins, for example, have a texture more like moist carrot cake with lots of sour cream icing.

I ordered eggs Florentine.  The eggs were perfectly poached with wilted spinach and enough hollandaise.  It was served on only one piece of toast which would not normally suffice to quell my hunger.

My friend ordered the pancake fried in a deep pan served with banana, maple syrup and strawberries.  The pancake had a texture similar to a crumpet on one side and was crispy with lots of butter.  She really enjoyed it.

Whilst Kelp is expensive for what you get, the service and quality of the food are reliable.
