It was my friend M who suggested we have yum cha today. As a vegetarian, I am not a good yum cha partner.

Without booking we surprisingly got a table straight away. I had not been here for years. It had not changed.

The rush of the staff (slamming dirty plates into containers, calculating bills and seating new arrivals) was strangely juxtaposed against a hungry crowd trying to wait patiently for the trolleys to visit their tables.

There were few vegetarian options on the carts. It was easy to order them. We had delicious dumplings filled with corn, carrot and different kinds of mushrooms. These were followed by vegetarian rolls which contained mixed vegetables and tofu in fried tofu-like skins. My favourite yum cha dish is the wrapped rice noodle in sweet soy. We ordered this filled with vegetables. The staff were obliging to bring us these different dishes.

My friend M loves prawns and these were plentiful in a variety of dumplings: prawn with chive, prawn with ginger, plain prawn, prawn, prawn, prawn. She was in heaven – undoubtedly a very full-stomached heaven by the end. I remembered that I was a bad yum cha partner.

We ate sweets in between savouries and were soon full. The egg tarts were served hot and creamy with a delicacy to the pastry and centre. M declared their mango pudding to be the best she had ever had.

What a nice way to spend a Thursday lunch time in rainy Melbourne.
