Tucked away on Hardware Street, the quieter side of Lonsdale Street opposite Hardware Lane, this little eatery was buzzing. Looking for a weekday lunch spot, we chose The Hardware Societe for its positive reviews and location.

There were only two vegetarian options: a potato and asparagus tortilla and a mushroom and goats cheese tart. Finding tarts overdone on the vegetarian scene, I elected to try the tortilla. It was served cold, garnished with saffron alioli and cold roasted capsicum strips. It was perfect for a light lunch.

The presentation was lovely and simple, the service friendly, and the environment noisy with the loud conversations of office workers bouncing off the modern walls and tables.

Tempters for dessert included almond croissants and an assortment of macaroons.

They do not take bookings but we did not have to wait for a table.

  2. There wasn't when I went, but the menu seems to change. Probably best to call the day you go to check.
